Carol Hurn D.V.M., Veterinarian, owner

I was born in Moses Lake, Washington, and grew up in a military family that moved quite a bit, attending high school in northern Maine, and college at Purdue University in Indiana. After graduating, I took a few years working at various jobs (surgery lab technician, record store clerk, high school chemistry teacher) before deciding to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. I focused on preventive care, medicine and surgery at Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Small animal dentistry became one of my biggest areas of interest while working at a family practice for 12 years in Columbus, Ohio.

In 2009, my stepdaughter moved to Chicago to attend SAIC and my husband and I relocated to Portland. We had visited Oregon and were drawn by the vibrant arts, music and food scene, proximity to the ocean and mountains, friendly people and the active lifestyle. I missed the close relationships with the clients and pets that I had in my previous work and decided to start my own neighborhood clinic. In July 2012 City Pets Vet opened its doors on SE Division Street, just a short bike ride from our house.

Running a practice has been a very rewarding experience.  Every day I look forward to coming in to do our best for the wonderful pets our clients have entrusted to our care.

Rebecca Greene D.V.M., Veterinarian

I grew up in Maryland (being part of a Navy family meant I also spent years in other places including England). I earned my B.S. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. My first career was as a human critical care nurse. I decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine after I was inspired by volunteering with a variety of animals at rescue hospitals (cats, dogs, rabbits, dolphins and sea lions!) I graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia in 2007. When I was in school, I first came to Portland for an externship at the Oregon Zoo. Since graduation, I’ve been an associate veterinarian at Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos, CA, a small animal and exotics practice. I enjoyed working with patients and their families to maximize health, and provide state of the art medical or surgical care when needed. I also worked part-time at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA, which is one of the largest marine mammal rehab hospitals in the world. I still participate in the Center's initiative to conserve the critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal. In my free time I enjoy snowboarding, hiking, biking and traveling with my husband, as well as kayaking and swimming with my rescue dog, Rio. I am so happy to be back in Portland, and I’m excited to be here to provide high quality compassionate veterinary care for Portland’s pets!

Heather, Practice Manager

Like many of us, my love of animals began at a very early age. I was three years old when my parents allowed me to pick out my first childhood dog, a German Shepherd. She also was three years old and was my best friend until we were both sixteen and it was time for her to leave my side. It was at that time that I for sure knew that I wanted to work in veterinary medicine. The doctor had been so compassionate and I wanted to help people the way he had helped my dog and my family. I started working in a veterinary hospital as soon as someone would take me. I began as a kennel assistant, then receptionist, assistant and ultimately became a veterinary technician and Certified Veterinary Practice Manager.

At home I live with my husband, my amazing little Chihuahua mix, three wonderful cats and a very soft mini rex rabbit. I can't wait to meet you and your pets!

Sean, Receptionist

I was born in Portland and was raised in the Richmond neighborhood. My childhood home is just up the street from City Pets. I attended PCC and later transferred to Oregon State. Primarily I worked in memory care for adults with Alzheimer’s as a nurse's aide and medication aide for several years. Near the end of my stay in Corvallis I found an ad for a position for animal care and took a job at a local animal shelter. It was at the shelter I fell in love with veterinary medicine and found the joy that the human pet bond can bring.  I moved to Seattle shortly after that and worked at a large animal shelter in the cat program, working with stray and feral cats. I was able to learn skills in cat care, and behavioral issues, as well as how not to get scratched or bitten.  I worked at the shelter a spell and then switched to working at a clinic in north Seattle as a receptionist.  After living outside of Portland for seven years I decided it was time to come home, and I’m glad I did because I found a spot here at City Pets Vet.  While the city of Portland has grown and changed, it still has the warmth that I missed living in other cities.  I’m happy to call Portland home once more and thrilled to be here at City Pets Vet. In my free time I like to go for walks around the Mt. Tabor and Richmond neighborhood, rock hound, hike, camp, work music festivals, and paint.

Jennifer, Receptionist

I was born and raised in Portland and have had a love of animals my whole life. Growing up we had cats, dogs, gerbils, fish and even a snake at one time. My love of animals led me to the veterinary field. In 1999 I started worked in a dual general and specialty practice. I love the human- animal bond, helping  pets and their families is a real passion of mine. I am excited to be part of the City Pets Vet team, continuing to grow and fulfill that passion everyday.

In my free time I enjoy spending  time with friends, reading, photography and baking. I enjoy the beach, exploring Oregon and traveling with my family. My family includes my fiancee, Jacob, my two sons, Hunter and Aidan, my Dachshund/Yorkie mix Loki, and my very talkative Siamese cat, Louis.

Matt, Receptionist

I grew up in Colorado and have lived here in Portland for the last four years. I am happy to be in the veterinary field and am currently working towards my technician certification. City Pets has always impressed me, first as a client and now as an employee, with the knowledge of the doctors and staff and the level of care provided. I am proud to be a part of the team. Outside of the clinic I enjoy reading, playing hockey and spending time with my two dogs, Bishop and Indigo, especially outdoors in some of the awesome parks around Portland.

Jen, Veterinary Assistant

I am English, but worked abroad, and travelled around Southeast Asia for 5 years before moving to Portland in 2013. Rescuing Nicademus, my cat, from The Republic of Korea, was the reason I got into this profession. He mostly sleeps but likes to sing to my husband and I at 3 am! Those of you with cats can appreciate this. I also have a former barn cat, Ophelia, who makes a lot of noise and destruction  for something so small. I would love a dog but my kitties wouldn’t!  I love hiking, camping, and soccer, and neighborhood clean ups. I have a passion for upcycling.

I enjoy being a part of the City Pets team and sharing the highs and lows of your pets health with you.

Mackie, Veterinary Assistant

I was born and raised in Southeast Portland and received a degree in environmental studies from Portland State in 2014. After working several years in retail and odd jobs I realized the place I'd be happiest at would be one with animals! At the moment I am taking classes and working toward becoming a Certified Veterinary Technician. I currently have a rambunctious cat named Sterling, and dream of the day when I can adopt my first dog. I enjoy hiking, reading and cooking in my spare time.

Courtney, Veterinary Assistant

I have been a vet assistant since 2016. At home I have  a dog, Kona, and two cats, Zoe & Luca. One of my favorite things to do in the clinic is dental prophylaxis. It feels good to send cats and dogs home with a healthy mouth and fresh breath. In my spare time Kona and I enjoy camping with the family.

Kat, Veterinary Assistant

Hello, My name is Kat. I’m from far away Springfield, Missouri and have lived in downtown Portland for two years and love everything about Oregon.

I have two kitty cats Winston and Isis They are definitely spoiled,  I love spending time with them and some day I’d like to have a dog. In my free time I enjoy hiking, camping, horseback riding, and traveling.

I am an enthusiastic Veterinary Assistant dedicated to providing the highest quality care to both pets and their people. My passion for animals and awareness of their needs allows me to succeed. I have loved working with animals ever since I was little and have been a Veterinary Assistant since 2011. I look forward to new experiences and I am excited to be apart of a fun, loving and caring team at City Pets Vet.

Scott, Certified Veterinary Technician

I was born and raised in Central New York where I spent a lot of time in the woods, fields and swamps of the region. In 1993 I went to school at Cornell University for a degree in Natural Resources. Upon graduation I lived in Ithaca for several more years and then in 1997 moved to Portland. After a year of living here I started working in the veterinary field and became a Certified Veterinary Technician in 2006. For the last nine years I worked with primates at the ONPRC but recently transitioned back to working with companion animals. In my free time I like to hike the regions trails, draw, sketch, cook, and paint miniatures. At home my cat likes to sit nearby while I work on these projects and vocally demand more love.

Testimonial

I love these guys! I was referred to them by my usual vet when they were completely booked and I was in a jam to get my sick kitty checked out before I left town. City Pets Vet worked me in immediately, gave my kitty great care, were very reasonable on pricing (did not ever try to upsell me on services or products), and were SO friendly to deal with. I will definitely go back! I have every confidence in their services.
